REU: Research Experience for Undergraduates

Our Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program is a mechanism for integrating a broad spectrum of undergraduates into materials research, nanoscience and engineering, and bioengineering.

We are pleased to announce summer research opportunities for undergraduates through our joint REU programs of the Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC) and the Nanoscale Science and Engineering Center (NSEC) based at Harvard. We provide a coordinated, educational and dynamic research community to inspire and encourage young scientists to continue on to graduate school. Students in our joint NSEC/MRSEC programs are part of a larger, diverse research community through organized and informal interactions with students, mentors, and faculty in the REU programs of the REU/RET Site in Materials for Bioengineering Research Initiative Dedicated to Gateway Experiences, the National Nanotechnology Infrastructure Network (NNIN), the Wyss Institute for Biological Engineering, and the Rowand Institute at Harvard University. Professional development workshops, faculty seminars on research and ethics, and community activities are integrated into the program.

Program elements include:

  • Weekly faculty-led seminars on various research topics and ethics in research
  • An emphasis on professional development, including written and oral skills and preparing for a career in science and engineering
  • An end-of-summer REU seminar series in which students present research results and conclusions
  • A final written report
  • Social activities and visits to local research institutes and area attractions

Program Details:

  • Dates for the 2012 Summer REU Program: 10 weeks, June 4 to August 11.
  • Application deadline is February 28.
  • Students receive a stipend of $4000. Housing is provided.

Note: Students interested in the National Nanotechnology Infrastructure Network (NNIN) REU Program may apply at http://www.reu.nnin.org. The NNIN program has additional requirements, and students must submit a separate application. The online application deadline for the NNIN program is February 8. All materials must be received by February 16.
